Online grocer Relay Foods slashes delivery fees

Virginia-based online retailer Relay Foods said this week it has slashed prices for its monthly home delivery subscription by 36% and expanded distribution schedules in all of its markets.

Virginia-based online retailer Relay Foods said this week it has slashed prices for its monthly home delivery subscription by 36% and expanded distribution schedules in all of its markets.

Fees for Relay's "Doorstep" delivery subscription beginning this month are $19 a month, down from $30 per month previously, the Charlottesville, Va.-based online retailer said.

The price drop reflects improvements in delivery route efficiency, but is also designed to entice more shopper trial, a company spokeswoman told SN Wednesday.

"Relay Foods has grown and evolved a lot as a company, from technical, logistical, and fulfillment standpoints, allowing it to better serve customers more effectively and efficiently. Relay knows that customers truly value the convenience of home delivery — because they tell us — and has made it a goal to make it available to a wider audience," spokeswoman Cheryssa Jensen said. "This price drop makes home delivery even more affordable, which has already been attracting the expected increase in customers and orders."

“Home Delivery saves our customers time — time they can spend on activities more fulfilling than standing in a check-out line,” Derek Mansfield, chief revenue officer Relay Foods, said in a statement. “This dramatic price reduction is proof of Relay Foods’ commitment to providing the best possible grocery shopping experience for customers.”

The delivery price reduction follows implementation of lower everyday food prices at Relay, officials added.

Earlier this year, Relay revamped its online meal planning tools, increasing ease of navigation, customization of recipes, and broadening special dietary offerings. The company will continue to roll out further improvements to its website experience in the coming year, including “Inspiration Pages,” a navigational tool that will offer uniquely themed pages and provide a personalized but simple browsing experience, the company said.

Relay Foods provides online ordering of fresh foods and healthy groceries for delivery or free pick-up in Virginia, Washington-Baltimore, and the Triangle region of North Carolina.
