SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Warehouse employees of P&C Food Markets here, a division of Penn Traffic Co. here, ratified a new five-year agreement last week that will prevent the chain from seeking an outside contractor to run two distribution centers for the length of the contract, a union spokesman told SN. P&C officials declined comment on the labor situation. According to Tom Goodwin, president of Teamsters Union Local 317, P&C had been considering subcontracting supervision of the warehouses and deliveries to a third party unless it could get union concessions. Goodwin said the union's concessions in the new agreement include an immediate decrease of $1.40 an hour for the 629 drivers, mechanics and warehouse workers that it covers. That money will be retrieved over the course of the agreement, he said -- 30 cents a year in the second and third years and 40 cents a year in the fourth and fifth years. The union also agreed to allow P&C to raise the number of part-time employees from 130 to 140, Goodwin said. He said the company agreed to increase its pension contribution in each of the five years and to add a $7 weekly co-payment for health insurance. The new contract was ratified, with the union's recommendation, by a vote of 206 to 151; it will expire Feb. 5, 2001.
