COMPTON, Calif. -- Ralphs Grocery Co. here promoted what it called its "wide selection" of pears in a full-page, full-color advertisement.

The item-price feature of the promotion was 3 pounds of Bartletts for $1.
Besides the Bartletts, Bosc pears retailed for 39 cents a pound, and five more-exotic varieties were 59 cents per pound for the promotion.
The full-color ad included illustrations and descriptions of Bartletts, Red Pears, Winter Nelis Pears, Comice Pears, Seckel Pears and French Butter Pears. The Bosc pears were not described.
The chain also included eating suggestions in the advertisement. For example, the ad recommended French Butters and Seckels for lunch boxes, Comice pears for desserts or as an accompaniment to cheeses and Winter Nelis for canning and baking.
