PLEASANTON, Calif. -- Safeway here said last week that Peter A. Magowan will retire as chairman at the chain's annual stockholders' meeting May 12.

Magowan will stay with Safeway as a director, but the responsibilities of chairman will be assumed by Steve Burd, president and chief executive officer of the company.

Magowan has held the chairman post since 1980, when he was also named chief executive officer. In April 1993, Magowan relinquished the title of CEO, and became president and managing general partner of the San Francisco Giants baseball team. In total, he has spent 30 years with Safeway.

In 1993 Magowan was named Business Executive of the Year by the San Francisco Times due to his efforts to keep the Giants in that city. He is also a director of Caterpillar Inc. and Chrysler Corp., and has served on various other boards, including Cox Communications, Pacific Gas & Electric, and Vons Cos., Arcadia, Calif. Safeway also said last week that William Y. Tauscher, chairman and chief executive officer of Vanstar Corp., has been nominated for election to the board of directors. He would succeed outgoing board member Sam Ginn.
