Two Albertsons Cos. supermarket chains — Safeway and Vons — have launched same-day online grocery delivery with Shipt in key metropolitan areas.

Safeway has initiated Shipt delivery service from its stores in 13 markets, including Tucson and Phoenix, Ariz.; Boulder, Colorado Springs, Denver and Fort Collins, Colo.; Baltimore; Reno, Nev.; Eugene and Portland, Ore.; Seattle and Spokane, Wash.; and Washington, D.C.

Shipt said the new market areas with Safeway extend the reach of its online grocery delivery service to more than 10.9 million households.

“Shipt’s footprint across the country is rapidly expanding, not only into new communities but also with expanded retailer offerings,” Shipt founder and CEO Bill Smith said in a statement. “Safeway customers already know the value of convenience, and this expansion gives them a new way to access their favorite Safeway signature products.”

“Vons is an exciting addition for Shipt members in Las Vegas. This expansion to the marketplace brings our members more options, more product offerings and more ways to shop local retailers,” Smith commented.

In the new markets with Safeway and Vons, new Shipt members are being offered a two-week free trial and $15 off their first order.

The two chains also offer online grocery shopping and delivery via Instacart.

Through Shipt’s service, the retailers’ customers can browse, search and shop the in-store assortment of products — including groceries, fresh foods and household items — in the Shipt online marketplace and app. They also can note preferences, pick a one-hour delivery window and pay for their order. Shipt personal shoppers pick, bag and deliver the items.

A subsidiary of Target Corp., Shipt has made its service available to about 50 million households in more than 150 markets nationwide.
