Sam Duncan to Aldi: Bring it on

It looks like Aldi is increasing its presence in Pennsylvania, but Supervalu CEO Sam Duncan isn’t scared of a little friendly competition for Save-A-Lot. “We compete very well with Aldi. We will gladly take them on any time, any place. That's not an issue with us,” Duncan said on Wednesday during a call with analysts.

Aldi is closing the 66 Bottom Dollar stores in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh on January 15, as been previously reported by SN. These stores were just purchased from Delhaize this fall, and it’s assumed that Aldi will be opening its own stores in the Bottom Dollar locations.

Duncan suggested that Aldi will be paying premium prices for the real estate.

“Those Bottom Dollar stores, a lot of those were very high rent. We're looking at some of those locations before Bottom Dollar, and we established our rate that we would pay. And then, they came in above us and paid some very high prices. So, we'll see how that all unfolds, but we'll gladly take them on,” he said.
