BROCKTON, Mass. -- A memorial service was held here for Stanton Walker Davis, a supermarket pioneer and longtime principal in Shaw's Supermarkets, East Bridgewater, Mass. Davis died Aug. 8 at 86, after a long illness.

Davis and his family were recognized as being among the first operators to introduce self-service supermarkets, move their stores out of downtown locations and into plazas and malls, stay open 24 hours, and implement computerized scanning.

He is survived by his wife, Elisabeth; a son, two daughters, six grandchildren, a brother and a nephew.
