NEW YORK -- The first conference on supermarket video will be held July 20 and 21 at the Universal City Hilton and Towers in Los Angeles. "Cross-Promoting Video Titles in Supermarkets" will be sponsored by Supermarket News and Brand Marketing here in association with AIM Promotions, Astoria, N.Y. Supermarket, brand marketing, studio and distribution executives in attendance will learn about cross-promotions that worked and those that failed. They'll also be presented with information on how to improve their cross-promotional campaigns. Topics on the agenda include "The Jello/Jurassic Park Juggernaut: A Case for Integrated Cross-Promotions," "Free Willy/ Bumble Bee: A Case Study in Making Cross-Promotions Fly," "Executing Cross-Promotions at Retail" and "What Studios Look for in Cross-Promotion Partnerships With Branded Packaged Goods Marketers." In a keynote talk, Kirk Mueldener, director of video operations at Hy-Vee Food Stores, Chariton, Iowa, will discuss "Using Cross-Promotions to Capture the Synergies in Supermarket Home Video." The conference program also will touch on cross-promoting with video rentals, catalog products and special-interest titles, as well as the cost-effective communication of cross-promotions, and the outlook for home video and cross-promotions in supermarkets. Retail executives from Food Lion, Hy-Vee, D&W Food Centers and Dierbergs Markets have committed to participate in the conference. From the studios, top marketing and sales executives from MCA/Universal Home Video, Buena Vista Home Video, Warner Home Video, Paramount Home Video, MGM/UA Home Entertainment, Columbia TriStar Home Video, FoxVideo and Turner Home Entertainment are slated to be involved. The program also will reflect the experience of packaged goods companies, such as Ralston Foods, Kraft General Foods and Bumble Bee Seafood. Other firms on the agenda include Ingram Entertainment, Major Video Concepts, SuperComm, Adam's Media Research, AIM Promotions and Bonacker & Leigh. The event will include a VIP tour of MCA/Universal Studios and a sneak preview of a major motion picture.
