A desire for transparency into the food supply chain initially drove demand for voluntary disclosure standards such as Non-GMO Project Verification, USDA Organic Certification, and Certified Humane.
The United States government has taken a more assertive approach to meeting this public outcry for greater transparency with the National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard [NBFDS] declared on December 20, 2018.
Food manufacturers have a time consuming task of understanding which product ingredients are a BE risk, reviewing them against the Standard, and understanding which elements are applicable to their formulation. They must then determine the relevant pathway for compliance, which may include changing product labels or reformulation. And this all has to be completed by the Standard’s mandatory compliance date of January 1, 2022.
For brand owners with hundreds or thousands of affected products, 2022 isn’t that far away, especially if they need to reformulate or relabel products in time to stock retail shelves.
