Citrus sales thrived during the cold winter months.

Citrus made up 6.1 percent of total produce dollar sales, and accounted for 13 percent of total fruit sales for the 52 weeks ended Jan. 28. Citrus averaged sales of $3,172 per store, per week, an increase of 3.9 percent compared to the previous year. The category’s average volume sales per store per week increased 1.1 percent for the tracked period, while the average retail price of citrus increased 2.8 percent from the previous year, to $1.30.

Citrus sales peaked the weeks of Feb. 6 and Feb. 13, at $4,595 per store, followed by the week of Feb. 20, at $4,410 per store. The lowest-selling weeks for citrus were the weeks of Aug. 27, at $2,132 per store and Oct. 29, at $2,153 per store.

The Citrus category posted the highest contribution to produce sales in the South region, at 6.3 percent, followed by the East and West regions at 5.9 percent. The East region posted the highest average citrus sales at $3,873 per store, up 8 percent compared to the previous year. 

Mandarins accounted for 39.5 percent of citrus sales during this time, followed by oranges at 26.5 percent and lemons at 17.1 percent.
