BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Wal-Mart Stores will add more self-checkout lanes at its Wal-Mart and Sam's Clubs stores, according to a Reuters report quoting Chief Financial Officer Charles Holley.

About 1,600 of the more than 3,800 U.S. Wal-Mart stores already have self-checkout lanes but more will be getting them, the report said. At Sam's Club, about 80 out of 611 stores already have self-checkout lanes and another 220 will get them this year. The company will not eliminate cashiers.

Wal-Mart’s plans run counter to steps taken last year by Big Y Foods and Albertsons LLC, which announced they would eliminate self-checkout lanes.
