ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Wegmans will host an Earth Day celebrations in all of its stores from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
“As customers shop, they’ll see, touch, taste and learn how the three ‘R’s’ of environmentalism — Reduce, Reuse, Recycle — are shaping the way Wegmans does business, and they’ll discover easy ways their own families can make more sustainable choices at home,” according to Wegmans.
Shoppers will learn about organic farming methods, while offered samples of organic foods, and be educated about products that can light their home with less energy, and cleaning products that leave behind no toxic residue. Shoppers who bring in a plastic grocery bag tightly filled with used plastic bags can exchange it for a new reusable bag during the event.
“Since we introduced our reusable shopping bags (in 2007) and our new stronger plastic bags (in 2008), we’ve been able to reduce our plastic use by 30%, or 146 million fewer bags per year,” said Jason Wadsworth, Wegmans’ sustainability specialist, in a statement. “This shows how big a difference people working together can make by shifting some everyday choices.”
