JANUARY

  • Pathmark, Carteret, N.J., named Kenneth Martindale co-president and chief marketing officer. He joined president and chief executive officer Frank Vitrano.

  • Bob Spengler retired as president and chief operating officer, Save Mart, Modesto, Calif.

  • Meijer, Grand Rapids, Mich., named Mark Murray president.

  • Publix, Lakeland, Fla., named FedEx-Kinko's veteran Laurie Zeitlin senior vice president and chief information officer.

  • Larry Zettle retired as executive vice president and COO, Price Chopper Supermarkets, Schenectady, N.Y.

  • John R. Block, executive vice president, Food Marketing Institute, joined law firm Olsson, Frank & Weeda, Washington, as senior legislative advisor.

  • Schnuck Markets, St. Louis, named Scott Schnuck president and CEO, Craig Schnuck chairman and Todd Schnuck executive vice president.

  • Matt Gutermuth was named president of GroceryWorks, Pleasanton, Calif.

FEBRUARY

  • David Marsh was fired from his family's company, Indianapolis-based Marsh Supermarkets, in a shakeup prior to the company's sale.

  • Montreal-based Metro appointed Richard Dufresne chief financial officer and senior vice president.

  • Unified Western Grocers, Los Angeles, named Randy Scoville vice president of accounting and chief accounting officer.

  • Albertsons, Boise, Idaho, appointed Carl Jablonski president of its Shaw's Division, West Bridgewater, Mass.

  • Ron Marshall, CEO, and Kathleen McDermott, executive vice president, secretary and general counsel of Minneapolis-based Nash Finch, resigned.

  • Jeff Rumachik succeeded John R. Block as executive director of FMI's wholesaler division.

  • Supervalu-owned Shoppers Food & Pharmacy, Baltimore, named Dick Bergman, president.

  • Jeff Wood was named executive vice president and COO, Haggen, Bellingham, Wash.

  • Albertsons named Judy Spires president of Albertsons' Eastern Division.

  • Stater Bros. Markets, Colton, Calif., promoted Phil Smith to executive vice president of finance, CFO and CAO.

  • Charles L. D'Amour named president of Big Y Foods, Springfield, Mass., and remained COO.

  • Peter Krieger was named interim CEO of Balducci's, Bethesda, Md.

  • Grocery Outlet, Berkeley, Calif., named MacGregor Read and Eric Lindberg co-CEOs. Steven Read was named executive chairman of the board.

  • Larry Nurse was named president and COO, Lund Food Holdings, Minneapolis.

  • Supervalu, Minneapolis, named Trader Joe's veteran M. Glenn Backus II general manager, Sunflower Market.

  • Cerberus Capital Management, New York, named former Wild Oats chairman Robert Miller CEO of Albertsons LLC.

APRIL

  • Kris Buehler-Massat was named CEO of Buehler Foods, Jasper, Ind.

  • Wal-Mart Stores, Bentonville, Ark., promoted Lawrence Jackson to president and CEO of its global procurement division.

  • Thomas Dickson, president and CEO, Ruddick, Charlotte, N.C., was elected chairman of the board.

  • Supervalu named Steve Kaczynski president of bigg's, Cincinnati.

  • Jose Alvarez was named CEO of Stop & Shop/Giant-Landover.

  • Associated Grocers of New England, Pembroke, N.H., promoted Steve Murphy to senior vice president and CFO.

  • Mark Gross, co-president C&S Wholesale Grocers, Keene, N.H., resigned to form an investment firm.

MAY

  • Alec Covington was named president and CEO of Nash Finch.

  • Cerberus named five regional Albertsons LLC presidents: Donna Robbins, Northern California; John Sheehan, Florida; Wayne Denningham, Rocky Mountains; William Emmons, Texas; and Bob Colgrove, Southwest.

  • Ann G. Daw was named president of National Association for the Specialty Food Trade, New York.

  • Cal Dooley was named president and CEO of Grocery Manufacturers Association/Food Products Association, Washington. • Manly Molpus, president and CEO, GMA, said he would retire at year end.

  • Kevin Kemp was named president of Supervalu's Eastern region.

  • Bill Moran, president, CEO and founder of Save-A-Lot, retired. Supervalu named Bill Shaner to succeed Moran.

  • Michael D. Byars was named CEO. Minyard Food Stores, Coppell, Texas.

  • After acquiring Albertsons, Supervalu named Mike Jackson president and COO; John Hooley executive vice president, Supervalu, and president, Retail East; Pamela Knous executive vice president and CFO.

  • Kroger Co., Cincinnati, promoted Robert Moeder to president of the Central Division.

  • Frank Curci reigned as senior vice president and COO, Southern Family Markets, Birmingham, Ala., an affiliate of C&S, Keene, N.H.

JUNE

  • Larry Johnston, chairman, president and CEO of Albertsons, left after the sale of the company.

  • Bill White was named president and COO of Southern Family Markets.

  • Ron Johnson resigned as chairman, Minyard.

JULY

  • Paul Singer was named senior vice president and CIO, Supervalu.

  • Bruce Weitz was named president and CEO of Kings Super Markets, Parsippany, N.J.

  • Michael Ellis was named president of Kroger's Fred Meyer division, Portland, Ore.

  • Piggly Wiggly Carolina, Charleston, S.C., named Bill Edenfield executive vice president and CFO, and Robert Masche senior vice president and COO.

  • Marc Smith was named co-president at C&S.

AUGUST

  • Foodtown, Avenel, N.J., named William Donahoe president and COO.

  • Harrison Lewis was promoted to vice president and CIO of Haggen.

  • Ned Dunn was named CFO at Associated Grocers, Seattle.

  • Jim Lee was named president and COO, Stater Bros. Don Baker retired.

  • Rick Jurgens, CEO, Hy-Vee, Des Moines, Iowa, succeeded Ron Pearson as chairman.

  • Mark Murray was named president of Meijer, Grand Rapids, Mich. Larry Zigerelli resigned.

SEPTEMBER

  • Paul Boyer, co-CEO with Hank Meijer at Meijer Inc., Grand Rapids, Mich., resigned as CEO but remained vice chairman.

  • Sprouts Farmers Market, Scottsdale, Ariz., named Doug Sanders COO.

  • Bethesda, Md.-based Sutton Place Group named Barbara Parasco CEO.

  • Associated Grocers, Pompano Beach, Fla., named Chris Miller COO.

  • John Lederer resigned as president of Loblaw Cos., Toronto, and W. Galen Weston stepped aside as executive chairman. His son, Galen G. Weston, succeeded him, and Mark Foote was named president and chief merchandising officer.

OCTOBER

  • Mark Prestidge was named president of the Delta Division of Kroger.

  • Frank Lazaran was named CEO of Marsh Supermarkets.

  • King Kullen Grocery Co., Bethpage, N.Y., elected Ronald Conklin co-chairman of the board.

  • Gregory J. Young and Bob Panasuk were named co-COOs of Penn Traffic, Syracuse, N.Y. Bob Chapman, Penn Traffic president and CEO, retired.

  • IGA, Chicago, named Mark Batenic president and CEO of domestic operations. He assumed responsibilities for IGA USA from Thomas S. Haggai, IGA chairman, who became non-executive chairman.

  • Perry Odak resigned as CEO, Wild Oats, Boulder, Colo. Gregory Mays, chairman, became interim CEO.

NOVEMBER

  • Greg Dierberg was named president and CEO, Dierberg's Markets, St. Louis, and Andy Pauk became COO.

  • Online grocer Simon Delivers named Liwanag Q. Ojala president and COO.

DECEMBER

  • Herb Zarkin, chairman of BJ's Wholesale Club, Natick, Mass., became interim CEO
