JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Winn-Dixie Stores is on track, Peter Lynch, chairman, president and chief executive officer, told the Daily Record newspaper here.
"Here is a company that could have been extinct," he said, "[but] we saved it, we're on track, we're stable, we have cash and haven't even gone into the line [of credit] since I've been here."
Lynch said the chain plans to begin building new stores in existing markets "when we have a better market share." As for remodels, Winn-Dixie has spent nearly $2 million per store "to clean them up, [and] we're on track to getting stores back to where consumers feel very proud to shop there again."
Lynch told the newspaper he believes the next big trend will be an increased focus on health and wellness in schools through education, which will mean more pressure on retailers to be up to speed on health and wellness, he said.
