Aldi to open its 1st store on Staten Island in 2023

No-frills German discount grocery chain Aldi will open its first store in Staten Island, the southernmost of New York City's five boroughs, in 2023.

“We are excited to confirm we are planning to open our first Aldi store on Staten Island but do not have further details at this time. We will reach back out once we have more specific details,” Chris Daniels, South Windsor Division VP at Aldi, confirmed in an email statement to WGB.

With 2,200 stores across 38 states, Aldi is on track to become the third-largest grocery retailer by store count by the end of 2022, the Batavia, Illinois-based chain reported in a statement. Aldi currently has 123 locations in the state of New York, according to the discount grocer’s website.

Looking to continue its U.S. expansion nationwide, on Thursday Aldi will relocate its LaPorte, Indiana, store to a bigger location. The new LaPorte store at 199 Pine Lake Ave. will open its doors at 9 a.m. on Thursday and the current store at 1234 W. State Road 2 will close Wednesday, Aldi said.

“We are excited to provide local shoppers a revamped and refreshed Aldi store designed to make grocery shopping smarter, faster and easier,” said Laura Bauer, regional vice president for Aldi, in a statement. “We are always looking out for the needs of our shoppers, and decided to move our LaPorte store to allow more room for added fresh, high-quality products at affordable prices, which our loyal shoppers know and love.” 

As part of the grocer’s Gulf Coast expansion, Aldi opened its first store in LaPlace, Louisiana, last month.  The opening is part of the company’s nationwide growth plan, which includes the opening of approximately 150 new stores this year—close to 20 of which will be in Alabama, Mississippi, the Florida Panhandle and Louisiana, Aldi said.
