The long-awaited Fairway store in New York’s Tribeca neighborhood won’t be opening after all. Instead, the site will become a Target.

The site at 255 Greenwich St., where Fairway initially intended to open a store early this year, will open as a Target in October. The site was one of 11 smaller Target units to be built in urban centers during 2016 and 2017 announced by the discounter late Thursday.

Fairway, which is facing financial uncertainty including a recent credit downgrade, had changed its plans for the site several times but as of late last month the store was still on the retailer’s radar. Initially expected to open this spring, officials at Fairway more recently guided a 2016 opening. Plans for the size of the store also changed, from 52,000 square feet initially to 40,000 square feet.

Target said its site would occupy 45,000 square feet on two levels and feature apparel, baby items, home goods, beauty and food offerings, such as a grab-and-go section including sandwiches, salads, beverages, snacks and more. It will also include a pharmacy and mobile order pickup.

Other small Target stores expected to open next year include Long Beach, Calif.; two sites in Philadelphia (Rittenhouse Square and Washington Square); New York stores in downtown Brooklyn and Forest Hills, Queens; Brookline, Mass.; and Chicago-Lakeview Central. In 2017, Target intends to open small stores in Cambridge, Mass.; and two stores in Los Angeles (University of Southern California and Koreatown).
