Weis Markets Adds New Stores

Weis Markets today opened the doors of two new grocery stores in Baltimore County. The company invested $14 million in the Towson and Woodlawn supermarkets that will employ 400 full- and part-time associates. This increases the company’s presence to 15 stores, which service the Baltimore region, and employ more than 2,000 associates. The company marked the first of its openings with local dignitaries and customers in Towson with a community ribbon cutting ceremony and a $50,000 check presentation to the Maryland Food Bank, followed by a second ribbon cutting ceremony later in the morning at the Woodlawn store. Additional donations were made to the Baltimore Humane Society, Woodlawn Volunteer Fire Company, the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, Woodlawn Senior Center, and Morning Star, as well as Calvert Hall College, Loyola Blakefield and Woodlawn high schools. “Today is a big day for Weis Markets, the Towson and Woodlawn communities, and also for me personally as a Towson-native,” said Weis Executive Vice President Kurt Schertle. “When a Weis Markets moves into a neighborhood, we commit ourselves to being a good corporate partner that will do our part to help support essential community and nonprofit organizations, while also providing a high-quality shopping experience with our customers’ best interests and needs in mind.” Weis Markets celebrated with a weekend of festivities including associate pep rallies on Friday and the unveiling of a $430,000 donation to the National Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society, Maryland Chapter, at its 20th Annual Dinner of Champions on Saturday, March 2. Weis Markets President and CEO David J. Hepfinger was also honored with the 2013 Hope Award, the Chapter’s highest honor presented to an individual who exemplifies business, civic and philanthropic excellence. The new 55,476 square foot Towson store managed by Paul Maskavich and the 58,027 square foot Woodlawn store managed by Ron Kilma, feature more than 700 items in their produce departments. The stores also have full-service deli and meat departments offering USDA-Choice Beef and fresh sausage made on site, a sushi bar, a full-service pharmacy and a diverse selection of ethnic food options that caters to customers’ specific cuisine needs. Both stores have energy efficient features such as high efficiency refrigeration and freezer cases with LED lighting and motion sensors, which will reduce refrigerant usage by 60 percent compared to conventional supermarkets. The stores also include solar/thermal rated windows, LED lighting and skylights for natural lighting the reduce energy usage.
