Weis Markets Breaks Ground on New $21 Million Store
January 1, 2018
Weis Markets held a ground breaking ceremony to celebrate the new construction of its $21 million Selinsgrove, Pa. store. The store will be located at the intersection of Route 522 and Broad Street, steps away from the original location. Company Vice-Chairman and Interim CEO, Jonathan Weis, was joined by Selinsgrove-area dignitaries to participate in the ceremonial first dig. “We have been a part of Selinsgrove since we opened more than 100 years ago and have operated at our current site for more than five decades,” said Vice-Chairman and Interim CEO, Jonathan Weis. “Our new store is a symbol of our commitment to this area. Not only will it inject new money into the local economy and bring new jobs, it will offer tremendous one-stop shopping convenience to our customers. It will also operate more efficiently, benefitting our local environment.” The project is expected to bring approximately 100 new jobs to the area between the site work, which began in September, the construction, and the additional associates needed to fully staff the new location. Associates of the existing Selinsgrove store will transfer over to the new location upon project completion, which is expected to occur sometime in second half of 2014. The 66,740 square-foot flagship store is designed to be eco-friendly with advanced refrigeration and climate control technologies to lessen the store’s impact on the environment and global warming. These technologies will reduce the store’s refrigerant usage by 60 percent compared to a conventional supermarket. The supermarket features will include a larger fresh department with a greater selection of organic produce, service seafood and meat departments, an international cheese section, more gourmet and ethnic foods, as well as a full-service pharmacy, deli and hot foods counter and bakery. The store’s 35-seat café will offer dine-in or take out service, outdoor patio seating, and will sell 300 varieties of domestic and imported beer. The new Selinsgrove store will also have a Gas N’ Go gas station on the premises.
