SUNBURY, Pa. -- Weis Markets here plans to open nearly a dozen superstores by the year's end.

n and Altoona, Pa., and in Laurel and Havre De Grace, Md. -- are under construction and should be completed by the winter, said spokesman Dennis V. Curtin. Construction of a store in Pottsville, Pa., is expected to begin in the upcoming months. Remodels also are under way at Sunbury and Danville, Pa., stores, and a renovation of a Mount Airy, Pa., unit is slated to start in several weeks.

The projects are part of a $107 million expansion Weis launched last year. Weis has since opened nine superstores and renovated eight stores, Curtin said.

The new stores, some of which are replacements, will range from 40,000 square feet to 65,000 square feet. The superstores and the remodeled units will stress fresh food departments.
