MONTVALE, N.J. — A&P has assured dog lovers that its pet jerky is safe for consumption.
“Rest assured dog owners and lovers, our Preferred Pet Chicken Jerky is proudly made in the USA,” the retailer wrote on its banner Facebook pages last week.
The notification comes in response to reports concerning jerky pet treat-related deaths and illnesses. As of September, over 3,600 dogs and 10 cats have reportedly become ill from eating jerky pet treats, nearly all of which were imported from China. While most pets have fully recovered, about 580 of these pets have died.
The cause of the illnesses remains unknown, although some jerky treats were removed from the market in January 2013 after the New York State Department of Agriculture and Marketing Food Laboratory reported finding six unapproved antibiotic drugs in certain jerky pet treats manufactured in China.
To date, the FDA conducted more than 1,200 tests, visited jerky pet treat manufacturers in China and collaborated with colleagues in academia, industry, state labs and foreign governments.
