PITTSBURGH — Giant Eagle has acquired Rx21 Specialty Pharmacy, a move that will allow it to provide enhanced services to hepatitis C and organ transplant patients and providers under its Giant Eagle Specialty Pharmacy, the retailer said.
“We greatly value the expertise gained with the new acquisition of Rx21, particularly at a time when two significant new hepatitis C treatments are becoming available,” Brett Merrell, senior vice president of health and wellness of Giant Eagle, in a statement.

The Food and Drug Administration recently approved Olysio for use as a treatment for those with hepatitis C, and is expected to approve a similar new drug, sofosbuvir.
Approximately 3.2 million people in the U.S. have hepatitis C, a viral condition that causes inflammation of the liver and can lead to permanent liver damage, liver cancer, liver failure and cirrhosis, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

In addition to access to Rx21's expertise and clinical support, Giant Eagle Specialty Pharmacy customers suffering from Hepatitis C and transplant conditions will have 24-hour-a-day access to pharmacists ready to provide counsel on medication management.
