BENTONVILLE, Ark. — For the grand finale of what’s been a stirring series of book promotions for retailers across the world, Wal-Mart Stores yesterday reported its plans for the release of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows." They include midnight sales events and a special pledge to all fans of “the boy who lived.” The pledge — aimed at protecting those who want to read for themselves whether or not Harry will indeed keep on living — invites Wal-Mart associates to keep mum about the book’s ending after its July 21, 12:01 a.m. release. The pledge is in direct response to a request by JK Rowling to help keep the final tale a special discovery for all readers, the company said. Beginning July 10, Wal-Mart associates across the world will take, sign and post the pledge in stores. The more than 2,900 24-hour Wal-Mart stores across the U.S. will host activities the evening of July 20 including a trivia challenge and giveaways held throughout the evening, and customers and associates dressed in Harry Potter character attire. In some locations, awards will be given for best costume. Associates will also “sort” fans, giving them bracelets themed to of the book’s four Hogwarts' houses. These bracelets will ensure customers a place in line to receive a copy of the book after midnight. "Harry Potter book release weekends are very exciting for fans and we expect the July 20 weekend to make literary history,” said Andy Barron, senior vice president and general merchandise manager, Wal-Mart
