PURCHASE, N.Y. — Stop & Shop is introducing a “Sustainable Choice” program, starting with seafood, and rolling out other sustainability initiatives for Earth Day.

Seafood certified by a qualifying eco-label or listed on the New England Aquarium’s Best Choices list will now carry a “Sustainable Choice” icon. Products in the program include fresh seafood and frozen items from Stop & Shop’s private label.

The retailer has also committed to becoming “zero waste” by 2020 by expanding recycling efforts, encouraging the use of reusable bags and donating bakery items and frozen meat to regional food banks.

“From recycling initiatives to building sustainable stores, Stop & Shop continues to support meaningful, mutually beneficial partnerships that help bring green behavior into the workplace. We believe that the principles of Earth Day should be celebrated each and every day of the year,” Don Sussman, President of Stop & Shop New York Metro Division, said in a statement.

Customers who use one or more reusable bags through May 30 will be entered at checkout to win a year of free groceries.
