GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Joining the wave of retailers rolling out seafood sustainability programs, Meijer announced a comprehensive new seafood sustainability program.

Meijer will partner with the Global Aquaculture Alliance to develop its new guidelines. Meijer’s farm-raised seafood suppliers will also adhere by the Best Aquaculture Practices international certification program standards, and Meijer said that many of its suppliers “were already achieving high levels of certification relative to the BAP standards.”

Meijer will be working with the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership and seafood suppliers and producers to develop Fishery and Aquaculture Improvement Partnerships on policies, marine conservation, and fishing practices.

“Meijer has a great track record of working with responsible seafood suppliers,” Hank Meijer, co-chairman and chief executive officer, said in a press release.

“As we grow, the launch of this seafood sustainability initiative is simply the next step to ensuring we continue to provide our customers with seafood farmed and caught in the most responsible and sustainable way.”
