THE 2019 POWER 25 TOP BANNERS: H-E-B, H-E-B PLUS, JOE V’S HQ: SAN ANTONIO STORE COUNT: 400

Throughout all aspects of its business, H-E-B continues to integrate technology-based services into its offerings. As the largest privately held employer in Texas, the widely admired retailer continues to grow and nurture its nearly two-year-old acquisition of the Austin, Texas-based on-demand delivery service Favor. H-E-B continues to expand its store-level solutions such as H-E-B Curbside, which will be at more than 200 locations by year’s end; H-E-B Home Delivery, a resource available from 170 of its stores; and H-E-B Go, a mobile solution that allows people to scan their items with their phones and skip the checkout line. Yet while it’s rapidly adopting sophisticated technologies, the retailer continues to heavily invest in its people and store base. In a recent Dallas Morning News article, H-E-B President Craig Boyan said the company’s base of more than 116,000 employees is its “key differentiator,” adding that H-E-B is “doubling down on its people. We believe the main thing we need to do is invest in people—and better people.”
