eggs at a small Brooklyn store, reports said. The Waldbaum family operated seven stores by the time Izzy Waldbaum died in the mid-1940s.
Julia Waldbaum played an active part in the company and served as its secretary. In the 1960s, her picture and her recipes appeared on almost all of the company's 400 private-label products. And even though the company's ownership changed, she continued to visit the stores and conduct surprise inspections. A&P, Montvale, N.J., bought the company in 1986 and now operates 92 stores under the Waldbaum's banner.
Besides being involved in the supermarket business, Waldbaum was devoted to the opera and the theater. She also was a benefactress of several organizations.
She is survived by a daughter, Shirley Waldbaum Witkin; a son, Ira Waldbaum; a sister, Sylvia Goldman; a brother, Alfred Leffel; 10 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
