EAST WINDSOR, Conn. — Geissler’s IGA Supermarkets celebrated its 90th anniversary through the month of April with cake-cutting celebrations at each of its seven stores.

The last of the cake-cuttings was held Monday, but that was not the last anniversary event of the year, Jim Nillson Jr., co-owner of the seven-unit independent, told SN.

“We began in April because it was in April 1923 that my grandfather started this business. He opened a small, full-line supermarket here, and the family has carried the business on from there, expanding it.”

Customers helped celebrate at the cake-cuttings. The first 90 of them to arrive received a $10 gift card, and everybody was given a reusable shopping bag with Geissler’s logo on it.

On cake days, Geissler’s took the opportunity to sample some of its deli products. After cake and coffee and ice cream, customers could sample such items as Boar’s Head hot dogs and meats and a variety of other deli products at different stations in the store.

Commenting on the 90th anniversary, Nillson said he was proud that the business is still family-run.

“My two daughters and four nephews work here. Hopefully, they’ll carry it on.”
