H-E-B’s Central Market is boosting the health profile of cupcakes by adding conventional garlic that's been fermented into black garlic, to its chocolate cake mix.

The ingredient, which has twice as many antioxidants as conventional garlic, is also thought to help fight higher cholesterol, according to Bridgett W., efoodie editor of the Central Market’s More, Please! blog.

“This brand-new invention blends black garlic, fermented until it reaches a satisfying sweetness, into a luscious chocolate batter made with source cream and European chocolate,” according to the post. “Spongy-moist with enough garlic to meld into the chocolate without punching you in the mouth, the whole thing is topped with thick black garlic butter cream icing. That extra kick you get at the end comes from a pinch of cayenne pepper.”

H-E-B is headquartered in San Antonio.
