WEST DES MOINES — Hy-Vee is encouraging the public to keep an eye on one of its youngest cake designers: 17-year-old Lindsay Franzoni.

The part-time employee at Hy-Vee’s Galesburg, Ill., store on National Boulevard, defeated 53 other contestants at a statewide cake decorating contest sponsored by the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America in Springfield, Ill. Lindsay took home top honors with a winter holiday-themed creation in what was her very first competition.

“I was a little nervous,” Franzoni is quoted as saying, as posted on the Hy-Vee Facebook page. “But I was also having a lot of fun.”

The competition covered five main techniques and a 60-minute frosting face-off. The junior at Williamsfield High School graduates next spring and intends of pursuing a career in cake design.

She also hopes to compete in next year’s Hy-Vee Cake Designer Challenge.

“Definitely,” she said. “That’s something I’d love to do.”
