Target is planning to sell packaged alcohol and serve it in its Navy Pier store in Chicago, a smaller-format location that is set to open on Oct. 7, according to published reports citing applications for both on- and off-premise liquor licenses filed by Target.

The store, which will compete with a nearby Whole Foods Market that has a wine bar and serves beer and liquor in-store, will be the first Target location in the country to both merchandise and serve alcoholic beverages.
