ELIZABETH, N.J. -- Wakefern Food Corp. here used a sweepstakes and its 25th Anniversary Can Can Sale to sell more Coca-Cola products during a promotion than its ShopRite member supermarkets ever did before.

up to four cases, or less than 17 cents a can.

Wakefern also teamed with Coca-Cola and WPLJ radio in a 25th Anniversary Can Can promotion that awarded 25 35-inch RCA color television sets with a retail value of $1,999 each and a grand prize all-expense paid trip for two to yesterday's Super Bowl XXIX at Joe Robbie Stadium in Miami.

"We broke the record for Coke sales in the history of the company during the two-week period that Coke was on sale," said Laura McCafferty, a Wakefern spokeswoman. "This sweepstakes has really generated excitement." McCafferty said most of the stores merchandised the event using endcap displays, and sweepstakes forms were attached to the displays and shelf-talkers.
