PARIS — Billed as the world's first 100% pure dried honey cube for sweetening tea and coffee, the Honibe Honey Drop was awarded the Global SIAL d'Or grand prize for the most innovative new product at the SIAL trade show here last month.

The Honey Drop is made by Island Abbey Foods, based in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. Each drop is the equivalent of about 1 teaspoon of honey. It comes packed 20 to a box, in two flavors: pure honey and honey with lemon.

The product was selected by a panel of 30 trade journalists from around the world from a field of more than 250 products. Nine products were selected as the best in each category, and Honibe Honey Drops were selected as the most innovative of those products.

SN participated on the jury, which took place in May.

Other products that reached the finals included:

  • Sedlcansky Troubelin, a bake-at-home cheese from the Czech Republic.

  • Tuna-based hamburgers and sausages from Spain, under the Calvo brand.

  • Isio ActiStérol, a salad dressing from France guaranteed to reduce cholesterol.

  • O2 sparkling wine from Argentina.

  • Tillman's Toasty frozen, breaded chicken patties for the toaster; from Germany.

  • Bits O' Juice frozen lemon segments from South Africa.

  • Martini soda from Italy.

  • Green-Up, an all-natural energy drink from Poland.

No products from the U.S. were selected as finalists. Smartfood Popcorn Clusters from Frito-Lay received the “Country SIAL d'Or” in May for most innovative and successful U.S. product.

This year's SIAL conference attracted 136,381 visitors from 200 countries and 5,700 exhibitors from 106 countries, SIAL said last week.
