SALISBURY, N.C. — Food Lion is spurring impulse sales of its Blue Streak private-label energy drink by merchandising it in front-end coolers.

The Energy Zone-branded coolers were provided by a national-brand energy drink manufacturer, which Food Lion declined to name.

Located in 700 stores, the coolers stock single-serve Blue Streak cans, as well as cans of Monster, Red Bull and Full Throttle.

Stores that don't have the coolers only merchandise energy drinks by the four-pack, not single-serve.

Research firm Mintel reports that a growing number of retailers are also merchandising single-serve cans in front-end refrigerator cases to woo energy drink buyers from convenience stores, which account for most (62%) energy drink sales, to supermarkets.
