SCARBOROUGH, Maine — Hannaford Supermarkets is promoting its new line of private-label spice rubs by applying them to any meat order free of charge.
The rubs are marketed under the retailer’s Taste of Inspirations specialty line. Four flavors — Sweet Southern BBQ, Northwood Garlic, Herb Crust Rosemary & Garlic and Chicago Steakhouse — are applied to all meat orders.
“Just ask at the butcher shop, they’ll apply a spice rub to any order (even prepackaged steak, poultry or roasts) free of charge,” according to Hannaford.
When Hannaford touted the rubs on its Facebook page last week, several shoppers said they wouldn’t buy them because they are watching their salt intake. A few days later, Hannaford posted an update that the rub also comes in a salt-free flavor: Monterey Citrus Pepper.
“Last week, we posted about our line of Taste of Inspirations spice rubs, and some fans mentioned that they don't use prepackaged rubs because they're too salty,” according to the Facebook post. “Our merchandising team reminded us that we do, in fact, have a salt-free option.” The Monterey Citrus Pepper Rub is merchandised in the spice aisle and butcher shop in a 1.75-ounce package.
Unlike the other flavors, it is not applied to meat orders.
