LOS ANGELES — Chicagoans shopping at online grocer Peapod can buy their groceries for less than Ralphs customers can in Los Angles or D'Agostino customers in New York, according to a study released this week by research firm IBISWorld, based here.
The company analyzed three different market baskets in each city: one filled with store brands, one filled with commercial brands, and another filled with organics purchased at Whole Foods.
At Peapod, owned by Amsterdam-based Ahold, the store-brand cart cost $92.04, vs. $104.54 at D'Agostino's and $110.64 at Kroger-owned Ralphs. The average for all three carts in Chicago was $115.73, vs. $122.66 in New York and $124.43 in Los Angeles.
The average store-brand cart among the three cities was $102.40, a savings of about 14% off the commercial-brand cart. The average Whole Foods cart was considerably higher, at $140.95, although the Los Angeles Whole Foods provided the cheapest organic cart, at $137.52.
