Report: Police Called Over Twinkies Incident at Jewel-Osco Store

BUFFALO GROVE, Ill. — Local police were called to a Jewel-Osco store here last week after a customer became upset that he couldn’t buy more than a certain number of Twinkies, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

A company spokesperson could not confirm the report.

“But I know overall our customers were very excited about it and overall very orderly with it,” said Mike Siemienas, a spokesperson for Supervalu, Jewel-Osco’s parent company. “Obviously there were people who were upset when we were sold out of Twinkies, but the people that I saw were very understanding.”

Jewel-Osco announced on its Facebook page last week that Chicago-area stores would receive the final shipment of Twinkies and other Hostess snacks on Dec. 11.

Siemienas said Hostess had called Jewel-Osco about its dwindling inventory, and the retailer jumped at the chance to take the final shipment. He added that Twinkies had always “sold very well” in the Chicago market.

“So we knew that our customers in that market would be very excited to have one more chance to purchase the Hostess products that we received,” said Siemienas.
