IRVING, Texas — Supermarkets and convenience stores that apply for a permit will now be able to sell beer and wine here.
Irving held a special election in November 2008 that legalized the sale of such alcoholic beverages for off-premise establishments, Carolyn Beck, public information officer for the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, told SN. Beck could not provide the vote tally.
Three Kroger stores have already begun selling beer and wine, according to a published report.
Irving is one of a growing number of Texas communities — including Southlake and Waxahachie — that have passed similar resolutions over the last year. Under Texas law, communities can vote on which establishments sell alcohol. There’s been an increase in such ballots since 2003, when the state eased requirements for alcohol elections, according to Beck.
