Survey: Vast Majority of Pets Are Uninsured

CINCINNATI — Six in 10 dog owners would consider purchasing pet insurance if it cost less than $20 a month, according to an online survey conducted by the Kroger Co.

The survey found that a very small percentage — 4% of dog owners and 2% of cat owners —currently have coverage for their pet.

Still, many worry about the cost of medical care. When it comes to their dog’s health, cancer ranks as most commonly feared (27%), followed by hip/knee/leg injury (17%) and getting hit by a car (16%). Cat owners worry most about kidney disease (19%), cancer (17%) and injuries sustained during fights with other animals (10%).

About 10% would be willing to spend more than $3,000 on life-saving medical procedures, 15% would pay between $1,000 and $3,000 and 61%, $100 to $1,000.
