True Myth, a specialty appellation winery that produces wines from regions along California’s Central Coast, focusing on Chardonnay from Edna Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon from Paso Robles, has launched its wines nationally.
True Myth takes advantage of rich and fertile soils in these appellations to produce the wines. The name is inspired by the idea that “the one True Myth is Mother Nature,” and everything from the intriguing, artistic labels to the wine in the bottle embodies this theme, say company officials. Releasing in markets across the U.S. this month, the lineup includes the 2014 Paragon Vineyard Chardonnay from the Niven family’s Edna Valley estate and the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon from Paso Robles.
True Myth is the latest project from Niven Family Wine Estates, a three-generation, family-owned wine group who entered the Edna Valley more than 40 years ago. True Myth represents a modern take on the family’s winemaking legacy in the region—it draws from old traditions while embracing modern techniques, officials add. Made under the direction of winemaker Christian Roguenant, a Burgundy-born and trained winemaker who has been producing Chardonnay for more than 30 vintages, these wines are a reflection of their terroir of origin.
“True Myth wines offer an exceptional value for the quality in the bottle. It is rare to see vineyard designated, estate grown, SIP Certified sustainable, cool climate Chardonnay at this price point,” says Roguenant, who has worked with the Niven Family for nearly 20 years. “The relationships the Niven family and I have developed with growers in Paso Robles over the past 30 years have afforded us an opportunity to secure long-term contracts from top notch vineyards to ensure True Myth’s access to the phenomenal Cabernet Sauvignon.”
The 2014 Chardonnay is made from grapes grown solely in the Niven Family’s Paragon Vineyard. The vines, ranging from seven to 43 years old, are planted to a mix of Heritage and Dijon clones to yield a complex, yet balanced, wine. This classically-styled Chardonnay showcases flavors of tropical fruit with mineral undertones. Textured creaminess is balanced by a refreshing acidity that keeps the wine lively and fresh from start to finish. The wine is SIP Certified sustainable and retails for $18 per bottle.
Sourced from six different vineyards in the Paso Robles AVA, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon captures the essence of Paso Robles. It’s rich, yet smooth, and loaded with blackberry jam, cherry, black currant and spice. The wine has a suggested retail price of $24 per bottle.
“You will not find another wine that is presented as authentically and honestly as True Myth,” says John H. Niven, grandson of the late founders who currently serves as vice president of sales and marketing for Niven Family Wine Estates. “Every facet of these wines is soulful, artistic and intrinsically woven with the landscape, beginning with the hand-designed label featuring a modern and subtly sexy version of Mother Nature. These are wines that represent the special place they come from.”
