AUSTIN, Texas -- Whole Foods Markets here has created a “diet” plan to help shoppers reduce their carbon-dioxide footprint, the natural and organic retailer announced Wednesday. The Whole Earth Weigh-In: 30 Ways in 30 Days program will take place during April, which is Earth Month. Starting April 1, Whole Foods shoppers can make a personal pledge online at www.wholefoodsmarket.com to reduce their carbon footprint, calculate their own carbon emissions and take active steps toward reducing the country‘s carbon footprint. Shoppers can also find a Weigh-In guidebook with 30 eco-action tips in Whole Foods stores throughout the month. Tips encourage consumers to adjust their window blinds to reduce energy used for heating and cooling, and remind shoppers that 80% of the 25 billion single-serving plastic bottles Americans use each year end up in landfills. “With each of us on average creating 94 pounds of carbon dioxide daily, it is more important than ever to minimize our individual contributions to global warming,” said Michael Besancon, green mission task force leader for Whole Foods, in a statement.
