Target will close its only location in East Palo Alto, Calif., reports KGO-TV in San Francisco.

The store will be powered down in September, leaving the city with just one pharmacy and a few grocery options to serve a population of 28,000.

“After much consideration, we have decided to close our East Palo Alto store due to prolonged underperformance,” Target said in an emailed statement to Supermarket News. “We’re grateful to our team at this store, and we’re working with all eligible team members to offer them an opportunity to transfer to other Target locations. The closure is effective on Sept. 28, and we look forward to continuing to serve our guests at the nearly 50 nearby stores and online at Target.com.”

The city has been working on a new economic development plan. The shopping plaza where the Target is located also has an IKEA, Home Depot, and a Nordstrom Rack.
