West Des Moines, Iowa — Hy-Vee here recently rewarded a second-grade student who found a typo in a bakery sign with a dozen free donuts, much to the delight of his mother, who blogged about it.
“Thank you, Hy-Vee, for making Henry's day!,” wrote I'm Tyann Sheldon Rouw, on her blog, “Turn Up the Valium” (http://tyannsheldonrouw.weebly.com).
Last month, while shopping with his mother, Henry pointed to the sign, read it aloud and laughed. He noticed an “&” on the first line of the sign (donuts, bagels &) and another “&” on the second line (& pastries). “My heart swelled with pride, knowing my second grader had found an error in punctuation at a major retail grocery store,” she wrote. “Henry has been learning about proofreading at school. I almost called Henry’s teacher at home to ask her to come to the store so she could see the situation unfold.”
Henry wondered if he could get a free cookie from the bakery for his efforts. His mother thought a free box of donuts was perhaps more appropriate, but the bakery was sold out.
“Well, I was so proud of the kid and his eagle eyes that I tweeted Hy-Vee and told them about it,” she wrote in a recent post. “I sent them a link to my blog. They tweeted back and asked for my contact information. “
The store manager called and said he wanted to give Henry a dozen free donuts for spotting the miscue on the sign.
