Sales Review: Packaged Salads 2018-01-01 (2)

Packaged salads dollar and volume sales increased more than 20 percent in the past year.

Packaged salad kits made up 2.2 percent of total produce dollar sales and accounted for 16.4 percent of total packaged salad category sales for the 52 weeks ended Dec. 31. Packaged salad kits averaged sales of $1,171 per store, per week, an increase of 21.9 percent compared to the previous year. The category’s average volume sales per store per week increased 21.6 percent during the latest 52 weeks, while the average retail price of packaged salad remained steady compared to the previous year at $3.29.

Nationally, packaged salad sales peaked the week of Nov. 12, at $1,290 per store, followed by the week of Sept. 24, at $1,263 per store. The lowest-selling weeks for packaged salad were the weeks of Thanksgiving (week ended Nov. 26) and Christmas (week ended Dec. 31) at $964 per store and $918 per store, respectively. 

The packaged salad category posted the highest contribution to produce sales in the West region, at 3.3 percent, followed by the South region at 2.1 percent. Packaged salads posted the lowest contribution to produce department sales in the East region, at 1.5 percent. The West region also posted the highest average packaged salad sales, at $1,857 per store, up 16 percent compared to the previous year. Average sales of packaged salad increased 30 percent in both the Central and East regions, and 21 percent in the South region.
