ENVIRONMENTALISTS CHALLENGE FISHERY CERTIFICATION
askan sea lion colonies and a significant decline in pollock populations, the Alaska Oceans Program, the National Environmental Trust and Greenpeace International filed the second of two objections to prevent certification of three Alaskan fisheries by the Marine Stewardship Council. Pollock is the primary ingredient in fish sticks, fast-food fish sandwiches, and imitation crab and shrimp, the groups said in a news release. The fisheries in question are, collectively, the largest producers of pollock in the world. Certification by the MSC, an international nonprofit organization promoting responsible fishing practices, is intended to help environmentally conscious consumers make seafood choices that are compatible with their beliefs.
