DELHAIZE NAMES MESSIER TO NEW ROLE

SALISBURY, N.C. — Mark Messier has been named vice president of U.S. supply chain for Delhaize Group to oversee the creation of what the company calls a one-of-a-kind supply chain that will benefit all of the group's U.S. operating companies. He previously was vice president of retail services at Delhaize's Food Lion banner. Greg Finchum was named to succeed him. Finchum will oversee front-end services and training, retail labor management, food safety, quality assurance, standard practice enhancement, market renewal and prototype planning. He joined Food Lion in 1989 and most recently was director of retail labor and standards. Messier joined Food Lion in 2001 from sister chain Hannaford Bros.

PRICE CHOPPER MAKES VP PROMOTIONS

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — Price Chopper Supermarkets here announced that Lee E. French has been promoted to vice president of seafood merchandising. In addition, Michael Howard has been promoted to vice president of budgeting and statistics. In his new position, which had been vacant, French will be responsible for all financial results for the seafood departments at the 115-store chain. French began his career at Price Chopper in 1975 and was most recently director of seafood merchandising. Howard will continue to be responsible for the development of the annual profit plan, financial statistical analysis and the chain's general ledger financial reporting system. He has worked for Price Chopper since 1977 and was most recently director of budgeting and statistics.

GIANT HIRES KNORR IN TECH POST

CARLISLE, Pa. — Giant Food Stores here announced last week the hiring of Lawrence Knorr as the chain's new director of information systems. Knorr will be responsible for supervising the information systems teams, which support marketing and merchandising, supply chain and retail in-store processing. Giant is a division of Amsterdam-based Ahold. Knorr most recently was chief information officer for the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board.
