ROUNDY'S TAPS FITZGERALD FOR MERCHANDISING
MILWAUKEE — Roundy's Supermarkets here said it has named Don Fitzgerald group vice president of merchandising and procurement, effective March 10. He spent 28 years at Dominick's, now owned by Safeway but formerly run by Robert Mariano, the current chief executive officer at Roundy's. Fitzgerald most recently was vice president of sales and merchandising for Meijer Inc. He also spent two years as a partner at The Partnering Group consulting firm. He succeeds Robin Michel, who recently was named executive vice president and general manager at Ahold's Giant of Landover, Md., banner.
FOOTBALL STAR JOINS H-E-B IN WELLNESS ROLE
SAN ANTONIO — Wane McGarity, former wide receiver for the University of Texas Longhorns, the Dallas Cowboys and the New Orleans Saints, has joined H.E. Butt Grocery Co. as program manager for health and wellness, the company reported. In the newly created position, McGarity will be based at the company's headquarters here and will be responsible for providing strategic and tactical execution of health and wellness initiatives for H-E-B customers. Of particular focus for McGarity will be community-based outreach efforts centering on childhood obesity in Texas and programs aimed at improving nutrition and increasing physical activity for children and their families. McGarity will also work internally at H-E-B to align and integrate the company's health and wellness efforts in advertising and marketing, public affairs and store operations. Prior to joining H-E-B, McGarity served as a fitness specialist for Xtreme Speed, San Antonio.
UNITED ELEVATES VAN RYSDAM AS SIGEL RETIRES
DAYVILLE, Conn. — United Natural Foods here said that Robert A. Sigel, who had been president of specialty distribution and president of the Millbrook Distribution Services division, is retiring effective March 14. Named president of specialty foods at United Natural was Casey Van Rysdam, who joined the company in December as vice president of business development. He will report to Richard Antonelli, executive vice president and chief operating officer and president of distribution. United last month said the integration of Millbrook, which it acquired late last year, would take longer than it previously had anticipated.
TOPS ASSIGNS SIX EXECUTIVES TO NEW POSITIONS
WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. — Tops Markets here has announced new leadership assignments for six Tops officials, who will work to guide initiatives in Tops Markets' operations, stemming from the chain's recent purchase by Morgan Stanley Private Equity. John Persons has been named senior vice president of operations for the 71 Tops Markets locations, with a focus on employee development, as well as sales development, budgeting and strategic objectives. Jack Barrett, named senior vice president of human resources, will head up human resources and will be lead representative in labor relations. Mike Metz has been named vice president of information technology. Mike Verostko, vice president of sales development, will oversee ad programs, public relations, community relations, food safety, customer relationships, fuel marketing and customer research. Tom Fitzgerald, vice president of real estate and construction, is responsible for land acquisition, property lease management, physical improvements, legal matters, maintenance and purchasing. Dave Prisaznuk, controller, oversees Tops' financial activities, including control of corporate assets, as well as risk management, treasury functions, financial reporting and payroll administration.
SUPERVALU NAMES OLIVER TO INTERIM IR POST
MINNEAPOLIS — Supervalu said David Oliver, who had been vice president and controller in Supervalu's supply chain division, will be interim vice president of investor relations. Before joining Supervalu in 2004, Oliver was chief financial officer at Arden Group, parent of the Gelson's supermarket chain in Los Angeles. Supervalu said Oliver “served in a key leadership role” in the Albertsons acquisition. As previously reported, the current vice president of investor relations, Yolanda Scharton, is leaving effective April 30.
