SAFEWAY APPOINTS TWO NEW BOARD MEMBERS

PLEASANTON, Calif. — Safeway announced the appointment of Frank Herringer and Kenneth Oder to the company's board of directors, expanding the board from 9 to 11 members. Herringer is the chairman and former chief executive officer of Transamerica Corp., a financial services company. He joined Transamerica in 1979 and held various positions before becoming CEO in 1991 and chairman in 1995. Transamerica was acquired by Aegon in 1999. Oder was Safeway's executive vice president of labor relations, human resources, legal and public affairs, from 1993 to 2000.

PRICE CHOPPER HIRES COBUZZI AS MARKETING VP

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — Price Chopper Supermarkets here said Peter Cobuzzi has been hired as vice president of marketing, reporting directly to Joe Kelley, vice president of sales and merchandising. Cobuzzi will be responsible for brand management, marketing, advertising, market research, business intelligence and consumer services for the 116-store chain. He comes to Price Chopper from Fortunoff, where he was senior vice president of marketing.
