FMI-The Food Industry Association has hired longtime Wegmans Food Markets retail dietitian Krystal Register to spearhead health and well-being programs and activities.
In the newly created role as director of health and well-being, Register also will serve as the issue expert on all health and wellness and nutrition policy, operations and communication issues for the association’s membership, FMI said Monday.
“Krystal’s sterling reputation in the nutrition community contributes to her being a trusted authority within the nutrition and dietetics field and has demonstrated her ability to work seamlessly with her peers in retail dietetics, as well as dietitians in other practice areas, such as clinical, public health, community, and nutrition policy, which will augment FMI’s work representing member programs,” Hilary Thesmar, chief food and product safety officer at FMI, said in a statement.
A registered (RDN) and licensed (LDN) dietitian nutritionist, Register spent 12 years at Rochester, N.Y.-based Wegmans, developing and executing the grocery chain’s wellness programs, health messaging, employee training and in-store promotions, according to FMI. She also participated in community events, including the annual NBC4 Health and Fitness Expo and DC Gluten-Free Education Day, as well as in Smithsonian Food History programming. In addition, she often provided nutrition insight for local media outlets.
“I look forward to building this role and responsibility with Krystal and supporting her as she works with FMI to enhance health and well-being programs for our member companies as they develop, implement and evaluate their programs to improve the health of their customers,” commented Thesmar, who also serves as senior vice president of food safety programs at FMI.
FMI added that Register’s background also environmental and nutrition science studies plus clinical nutrition and personal coaching experience.
