Smith most recently was Delhaize’s U.S. CEO but resigned in September when he was not selected to succeed Pierre-Olivier Beckers as Delhaize’s global CEO. As previously reported, Delhaize named former Metro AG executive Frans Muller as its new CEO.

Shortly afterwards, Delhaize said Stéfan Descheemaeker resigned as CEO of Delhaize Europe, and the company said it was conducting a serach for a new CEO of Delhaize America.

At Office Depot, Smith is expected to lead the integration of Office Depot and OfficeMax, which closed their merger earlier this month. He succeeds co-CEOs Neil Austrian and Ravi Saligram, who both are leaving the company.
