MICHAELSON JOINS PRODUCE SUPPLIER

PERRYSBURG, Ohio — Produce supplier GreenLine Foods here said it has named retail veteran Steve Michaelson as its new chief executive officer. Michaelson most recently was chief marketing officer and senior vice president of own brands at Minneapolis-based Supervalu, a post he left several months ago, and before that he had been CEO at New York-based Fresh-Direct, the online grocery concern. Previously, he had been with Wegmans Food Markets and Weis Markets. “Throughout my retailing career when I have made produce more convenient and easier for customers to use, the organization has been rewarded with increased sales,” Michaelson said in a prepared statement. GreenLine specializes in providing value-added green beans and other produce to retail and foodservice customers.

PIGGLY WIGGLY NAMES RABON TO BOARD

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Piggly Wiggly Carolina Co. here said last week that Sandra Rabon has been elected to the company's board of directors, among a raft of other executive changes. Rabon, who has been with the employee-owned Piggly Wiggly operator for 14 years, is currently vice president of finance. In addition:

  • Lynn Willard was named vice president of supermarket operations. The 25-year veteran had been director of retail operations.

  • John Owens, also a 25-year company veteran, was named assistant vice president of business development. He most recently was assistant vice president of perishables.

  • Amie Grimes was promoted to senior financial analyst. She began with the company six years ago and most recently was assistant director of retail accounting.

  • Tim Smith, a nine-year employee of Piggly Wiggly Carolina Co., was promoted to coastal district manager. His most recent role was store operator at Pawley's Island.

  • Stephen Giebner has been named assistant director of retail accounting. Previously, he was finance operations manager at Thermo Fisher Scientific in Asheville, N.C.

FMI TAPS LIEBERMAN AS COUNSEL

ARLINGTON, Va. — Food Marketing Institute last week said it has appointed Erik Lieberman as regulatory counsel. He will represent FMI and its members by advocating for reasonable regulations across numerous federal agencies. He will also develop materials to help retailers and wholesalers comply with regulations and advise members on federal rules related to food safety. “Erik brings a broad range of regulatory expertise to FMI,” said Leslie G. Sarasin, FMI president and chief executive officer. “His familiarity with the supermarket industry and its priorities makes him a valuable addition to our team.” Lieberman joins FMI from the U.S. House Committee on Small Business, where he served counsel to the majority on issues ranging from regulatory relief to antitrust, food safety, data security and transportation. Lieberman was director of government affairs at the National Grocers Association from 2004 to 2007. Prior to that, he served as a legislative assistant to former Sen. Bob Graham.
